Everybody knows someone with a High Conflict Personality (HCP). "How can he be so unreasonable? So totally rigid and self-centered?" "Why does she keep fighting so much? Can't she see how destructive she is?" "Can you believe they're going to court over __________________?" (You fill in the issue).

How often have you asked yourself these questions about clients, or even about co-workers, friends, neighbors, family members or someone who is taking you to court? For the past thirty years I have asked myself these questions while handling disputes in communities, schools, businesses, families and the courts. Over the past decade I have observed a dramatic increase in high-conflict legal disputes—an increase driven more by personalities than by legal or financial issues. Perhaps half of all legal cases that go to trial today involve one or more parties with a HCP. In these cases, the conflict is driven more by internal distress than by external events.
